Part 5: A Review of Four Compact Open Headphones - The Sennheiser PX 100-II.

I reckon these headphones (and the PX 200-II) will show up in a number of places in our Buyers Guides pretty soon ... they're just ridiculously good.Yes, ridiculously good. Well done Sennheiser! :bow

I've always thought the PX 100 was a cool headphone, and I've always wanted it to sound better than the Porta Pro or SR60 .. but it didn't quite. No matter, it was still a cool little headphone.

Well, that's all changed now with the PX 100-II.

The new version has a beefier headband, and a single sided cable. The old version had cables going to each earpiece which tended to get a little tangly when you folded them up. Having a single sided cable cures that, but it also means Sennheiser had to redesign the headband to get the conductors over to the other earpiece. I bet that's why we got a beefed up headband in the new PX 100-II, because as far as I could tell there was nothing wrong with the old one.

The new unit also did away with the hard plastic carry case. I've seen some complaints about the carry bag that comes with the new unit, but frankly the hard plastic case that used to come with the headphones was so big that it sort of destroyed the compactness of the headphones. I don't know of anyone who actually used the old case, so I think the little fabric pouch is just fine. In fact, I'm pretty sure most people will just fold the headphones, wrap the cable around them, and shove them in a backpack pocket; and I'm sure they'll take the abuse just fine --- Sennheiser builds things very well.

Our subjective tests had every single one of our evaluation team preferring the PX100-II by a clear margin over the other headphones in this test. I heard them as better than the other cans in the test too, but I'm not sure they are as much better as the scoring implies.  I think everybody was just surprised and very pleased at how good they were and gave them high marks. This is an absolutely terrific headphone for portable applications where isolation from outside noise isn't important. But they really shine as a general purpose headphone for around the home or office. They're probably the most compact headphone of their type, and can be stored anywhere you could put a pair of sunglasses.

They're a great gift, bound to please any music lover.

Highly, highly recommended!
